Countdown to Congress

Speaker Spotlight: Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD

We are excited to host Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, as a plenary lecture speaker at the ASRM 2023 Scientific Congress & Expo. She will be sharing the Herbert H. Thomas Plenary Lecture titled Somewhere over the Rainbow…Lessons in Leadership on Monday, October 16, 9:15 to 10:00 AM.

Attendees will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice’s remarkable journey to becoming the leader of a freestanding medical school, and how her experiences contribute to the ongoing efforts to eliminate inequalities and promote health equity. By exploring the lessons in leadership from the first black female CEO of a medical school, participants will be equipped to engage in discussions on implementing solutions within their own professional spheres. The roles of mentorship and education will be highlighted as crucial factors in achieving health equity, narrowing the gap in equity, and ultimately eliminating inequalities. Additionally, the event will delve into the longitudinal associations between wealth and health, shedding light on the interconnectedness of these two domains.

Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice is the sixth president of Morehouse School of Medicine. She is the first woman to lead the institution. Before becoming president, she served as Morehouse School of Medicine’s dean and executive vice president. Previously, she was dean of the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College, where she founded and directed the Center for Women’s Health Research, one of the nation’s first research centers devoted to studying diseases that disproportionately impact women of color. A renowned infertility specialist and researcher, Montgomery Rice holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University School of Medicine.
