President's Guest Plenary Lecture:

Fertility and Optimal Cancer Treatment: Can Patients Have Both?

Fertility is one of the most critical survivorship issues facing young people diagnosed with cancer. Concerns about fertility can impact not only on subsequent quality of life of individual patients and their families, but also on their cancer treatment decision-making and potentially on their cancer outcomes. There are several strategies available for fertility preservation, some of which are standard and others which remain experimental, and increasingly these can be delivered in a time-sensitive manner to avoid delays in starting cancer treatment. View Dr. Partridge's full session description. Dr. Ann Partridge is interim chair of the Department of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she also serves as co-founder and director of the Program for Young Adults with Breast Cancer. The Health of the Male Partner: The Impacts on Fertility, the Mother, the Father, and the Child

Regardless of the cause of couple infertility, most of are treated by assisted reproduction techniques (ART). For the male partner, the investigation is most often limited to semen analysis aiming to decide on the most suitable type of ART. However, some of the causes of poor semen quality of are potentially curable. A more detailed medical investigation of the male partner might not only diminish the need of ART but also add to preventing serious health conditions in the parents and the offspring. Men in contact with the health service due to infertility represent a unique target for investigation and measures aiming to improve the fertility of the couple, prevent serious disease of both partners and ensure optimal health of their offspring.View Dr. Giwercman's full session description.
