SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT

Nicolas D Plachta, PhD
Camran Nezhat, MD Lectureship in Innovations in Medicine: Live Imaging Preimplantation Development
Monday, October 24, 9:15 – 10:00 am

We are excited to host Nicolas D Plachta, PhD, as a lecture speaker at the ASRM 2022 Scientific Congress & Expo. He will be sharing Camran Nezhat, MD Lectureship in Innovations in Medicine: Live Imaging Preimplantation on Monday, October 24, 9:15 – 10:00 am.

Preimplantation development is critical to establishing a successful pregnancy, but has thus far been studied primarily using histology in fixed specimens. We have pioneered the use of live-imaging approaches to uncover the main dynamic events driving early development in mouse and human embryos.

The goal of this presentation is to reveal how the early mammalian embryo forms. Mammalian development has traditionally been studied using fixed specimens and the dynamic course of events that pattern the embryo remained largely unknown. We have pioneered the use of live-imaging approaches in mouse and human embryos to study how cells interact with each other and chose their fate in vivo. This approach has enabled us to discover how transcription factors control the first cell fate decisions during development. We also identified many new forms of cellular organization, including long filopodia that control the first changes in cell shape, new types of microtubule organizing centers directing intracellular transport, a new class of microtubule spindle driving the first asymmetric cell divisions during development, and new structures formed by actin and keratin filaments, which establish the first tissue-like structures during the earliest stages of life. Thus, our research is exposing how various mechanisms and many new forms of cellular organization allow cells to choose their fate, shape and position to assemble the mammalian embryo.

This lecture is endowed by a 2011 Gift from Camran Nezhat, MD. Dr. Camran Nezhat pioneered techniques of video-assisted endoscopic surgery, which revolutionized modern day surgery. He along with his brothers, Drs. Farr and Ceana Nezhat, performed some of the most advanced procedures with these techniques for the first time, thus opening the vistas for endoscopic surgeons all over the world.
