Peter Schlegel, MD
The Society of Reproductive Surgeons Lecture: Evolution of Surgical Treatments for Severe Male Infertility Coordinated with Assisted Reproduction
Wednesday, October 26, 8:00 – 8:45 pm
We are excited to host Peter Schlegel, MD, as a lecture speaker at the ASRM 2022 Scientific Congress & Expo. He will be sharing The Society of Reproductive Surgeons Lecture: Evolution of Surgical Treatments for Severe Male Infertility Coordinated with Assisted Reproduction on Wednesday, October 26, 8:00 – 8:45 am. This lecture is supported by the Society of Reproductive Surgeons.
Treatment of severe male infertility requires surgery on the man in many cases, as well as the coordination with assisted reproductive technology for optimal results. This presentation will overview the evolution of microTESE for sperm retrieval to optimize results and limit risks of the procedure. Practical elements of sperm evaluation, processing and its use in ART will also be presented and reviewed.
Dr. Schlegel is the James J Colt Professor of Urology and Reproductive Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He has been recognized for his clinical and research activities in reproductive medicine and urology in over 300 peer-reviewed publications, over a hundred book chapters and reviews, and numerous national and international awards, including the Established Clinician Award from ESHRE, The Barringer Medal from the GU Surgeons, and the Maurice Greenberg Distinguished Service Award. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Dr. Schlegel developed his academic urologic career during residency with definition of the neurovascular anatomy of the pelvis, research performed under Dr. Patrick Walsh at Johns Hopkins. This anatomical work helped to form the basis for the procedure of “nerve-sparing” radical retropubic prostatectomy (for prostate cancer). After completion of his residency at Hopkins, he developed a special interest in endocrine action and male reproductive function. After a fellowship at The Population Council at Rockefeller University, he joined the staff at Cornell’s Medical College, where he has developed his academic career. His research spans areas of microsurgery, genetic evaluation, hormonal therapy, and other aspects of male infertility management. Dr. Schlegel has developed novel hormonal therapies for men with impaired testosterone production, was principal investigator on US and international trials for GnRH agonists for prostate cancer, and has developed protocols for genetic testing of infertile men as well as to define the prognostic role of these tests in male infertility treatment. He has also developed, performed, and published on novel techniques for sperm retrieval for azoospermic men. His technique for sperm retrieval in men with non-obstructive azoospermia referred to as “microdissection TESE” has been adopted at many centers around the world as an optimal approach for treatment of men with the most severe forms of male infertility. He has treated over 4,000 men with severe male infertility. His contributions to patient care were also recognized by RESOLVE (Barbara Eck Manning Founders Award) in 2018. He is a Past President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, SMRU and SRS, and he is a former trustee of the American Board of Urology.
