ASRM 2022 Speaker Spotlight: Elizabeth Helen Blackburn, PhD

SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT

Elizabeth Helen Blackburn, PhD
Plenary Lecture: Telomere Maintenance in the Context of Human Aging Processes
Tuesday, October 25, 8:30 – 9:15 am

We are excited to host Elizabeth Helen Blackburn as a lecture speaker at the ASRM 2022 Scientific Congress & Expo. She will be sharing Plenary Lecture: Telomere Maintenance in the Context of Human Aging Processes on Tuesday, October 25, 8:30 – 9:15 am. This lecture is endowed by a 1990 grant from TAP Pharmaceutical.

Basic science research first aimed at understanding, at a molecular level, how cells protect their chromosomal ends (telomeres), has led to broader implications. Beginning with work using model organism systems, subsequent collaborative discoveries have increased the understanding of disease processes in humans and optimizing human health. This lecture will briefly explain the fundamental and clinical science discoveries, then discuss the growing evidence that life-long factors impact on telomeres and may reverberate throughout the life course to affect health. These factors start from earliest life and include nutrition and conditions of pregnancy, as well as many societal and environmental factors.

Professor Elizabeth H. Blackburn, a Nobel Laureate, is currently Professor Emerita at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Throughout her long career in science she has been a leader in the area of telomere and telomerase research, having discovered the molecular nature of telomeres – the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes that serve as protective caps essential for preserving the genetic information – and co-discovered the ribonucleoprotein enzyme, telomerase. As Professor Emerita in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Professor Blackburn and her UCSF research team continue their work with various cells (including human cells), with the goal of understanding telomerase and telomere biology. She and her research team also collaborate in a wide range of investigations of the roles of telomere biology in human health and diseases, through clinical and other human studies.

Residents: Start Your REI Path in Anaheim!

ASRM 2022 is the perfect opportunity for residents to explore their career options in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Are you an Ob/Gyn resident considering an REI career? ASRM 2022 could be where it all starts!

When you register for the Congress, you can add the FREE lunch-time Resident Learning Sessions. These educational sessions are developed to help you understand real-world applications of the concepts learned during the scientific sessions. This resident-oriented program emphasizes the understanding of complex topics, the interaction with other disciplines, and the psychosocial sequelae and ethical concerns in human reproduction. You will also be exposed to a variety of interactive educational methods, have an opportunity to network with other residents interested in REI, and interact with faculty who have expertise in the daily topics.

Program spots are limited and are granted on a first come, first served basis. Click here for more information about resident learning sessions.
