ASRM 2022 Speaker Spotlight: Diana J Laird, PhD

SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT

Diana J Laird, PhD
Plenary Lecture: Linking Heterogeneity in Fetal Development to Oocyte Fate and Fitness
Tuesday, October 25, 9:15-10:00 am

We are excited to host Diana J Laird as a lecture speaker at the ASRM 2022 Scientific Congress & Expo. She will be sharing Plenary Lecture: Linking Heterogeneity in Fetal Development to Oocyte Fate and Fitness on Tuesday, October 25, 9:15-10:00 am.

During meiotic prophase I in the fetal ovary, we observed heterogeneity in dynamics and gene expression between oocytes depending on their time of meiotic entry. Lineage tracing of the first ~5% of meiotic entrants in mice revealed surprising properties of this oocyte cohort, including elevated resistance to apoptosis and exclusive contribution to the first wave of follicles formed before puberty. Furthermore, labeled follicles persisted into adulthood and contributed to offspring through the first four litters. These studies challenge the notion that the first wave of folliculogenesis has a limited contribution to fertility and highlight the potential impact of developmental trajectories on oocyte fitness.

Diana Laird is an Associate Professor in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science and the Institute for Regeneration Medicine. She directs the Laboratory of Germline Development, Fitness, and Aging. Her basic research program is motivated by solving infertility, reproductive aging, and understanding the effects of prenatal exposures to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and psychosocial stressors. She is involved in the intersection between science and society through the UCSF P30 EaRTH Center (Environmental Research and Translation for Health), where she is deputy director. After a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Harvard, she entered stem cell biology as a PhD student at Stanford in the lab of Irving Weissman. She trained as a postdoc in developmental genetics with Kathryn Anderson at Sloan Kettering Institute. Her research has been recognized by an NIH New Innovator Award (DP2), an award from the W.M. Keck Foundation for Biomedical Research and she was recently appointed as a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator.
