Alan W. Flake, M.D.
The David and Rosemary Adamson Lecture on Excellence in Reproductive Medicine: A Supportive Physiologic Environment for the Extreme Premature Infant, Progress and Future Application | Monday, Oct. 18, 3 – 3:45 pm
Extreme prematurity is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in pediatrics in developed countries. This is due to immaturity of major organ systems, and iatrogenic injury from non-physiologic treatments. This lecture will describe a physiologic system for postnatal support of the extreme premature infant that we call EXTEND (EXTra-uterine Environment for Neonatal Development) The lecture will provide an overview of the technology for Reproductive Medicine Specialists and supporting staff that will be valuable in the future in counseling patients with the potential for extreme premature delivery.
Alan Flake, MD, is an attending pediatric and fetal surgeon in the Division of Pediatric General, Thoracic and Fetal Surgery and holds the Ruth M. and Tristram C. Colket, Jr. Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His areas of expertise include clinical applications of fetal diagnosis and therapy, in utero stem cell transplantation, and Neonatal Surgery.
